A closer look at the Victoria Park Precinct Draft Legacy Plan.

If you’ve been following the plans for Brisbane 2032, you’ll already know that some big changes are coming to Victoria Park.

Now, the Queensland Government’s Victoria Park Precinct Draft Legacy Plan, released on 2 August 2026, gives us a much clearer picture of what this part of Brisbane could actually look and feel like in the years ahead.

And for future residents of Oria Spring Hill, there’s a lot to look forward to.

The vision goes well beyond the new Brisbane Stadium and National Aquatic Centre. Around two-thirds of Victoria Park is proposed to remain green and public space, with open parklands, expanded wetlands and forested areas creating a major new recreation and lifestyle precinct in the heart of Brisbane.

It’s the focus on everyday life that really stands out.

And when you start looking at the details, you can see what he means.

A park to enjoy every day

One of the things we really like about the draft plan is how much of it is designed around simply enjoying the outdoors.

There are places to walk, run and cycle. Shady lawns for picnics and an urban forest to stroll through. There are lookouts and gathering spaces, community sport and recreation areas, and places to meet friends or simply find a quiet spot outside.

The proposed urban forest will bring together generous lawns, tall trees, walking paths and layers of plants, creating cooler, greener spaces to explore and relax. It’s also intended to support greater biodiversity and provide more shade as the forest becomes established over time.

Then there’s York’s Hollow. The plan proposes expanding and restoring the wetlands here, with native planting, wildlife habitat and quieter spaces to spend time surrounded by nature. For birdwatchers, it could become a pretty special spot.

It’s easy to start imagining Victoria Park as somewhere you might walk in the morning, exercise after work or spend a lazy Sunday afternoon – rather than somewhere you only visit when there’s a major event on.

Making it easier to get there from Spring Hill

For future Oria residents, this is where the draft legacy plan gets particularly interesting.

Walking, cycling and public transport are a major focus, with new and improved connections proposed between Victoria Park and the neighbourhoods around it.

The plans include active transport connections, with links to surrounding destinations including the city, Fortitude Valley, QUT Kelvin Grove and the Herston Health Precinct. Wider, shadier pathways, including along Gregory Terrace, will get people into and around the park more easily.

There’s plenty more to discover

Look a little closer at the plan and some of the smaller details are just as interesting.

The ridgelines are proposed as places to walk, cycle, relax and take in the views, connected by a network of paths through the precinct. The wider plan also shows a lookout pavilion and lawns, a treetop boardwalk and play space, an accessible forest trail, community recreation areas and a proposed off-leash dog area.

There are also plans for community gateways – welcoming entry points designed to make arriving at Victoria Park on foot or by bike easier and even more inviting.

Put all of those elements together, and you begin to get a sense of a park that could become part of everyday life for the people who live around it, not simply the setting for Brisbane’s biggest sporting events.

The bigger picture for Spring Hill

We recently looked at what Brisbane 2032 could mean for Spring Hill. The Victoria Park Precinct Draft Legacy Plan adds another piece to that picture.

The new stadium and National Aquatic Centre will understandably attract plenty of attention. But for the people who will actually live nearby, it may be everything around them that makes the biggest difference – the parklands, trees and wetlands, places to walk and exercise, and better connections into Victoria Park.

What does the Victoria Park Precinct Draft Legacy Plan mean for Oria Spring Hill?

For future residents of Oria Spring Hill, the draft legacy plan is an exciting prospect: a major inner-city park and lifestyle precinct taking shape close to home, designed to be enjoyed long after the Games are over.

And there’s much more to explore in the plan. Over the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at some of the individual plans for Victoria Park and what they could mean for everyday life in Spring Hill.

Please note: The Victoria Park Precinct Legacy Plan is currently in draft form. Proposed elements are subject to consultation, further planning and design.
