The Gold Coast Airport’s Master Plan is a pivotal step in shaping our region’s future. As the Gold Coast continues to thrive, the plan, which is currently under consideration, outlines key developments that will enhance our local economy and the lifestyle we all cherish.

The airport welcomes around 6.2 million people a year, and by 2044, almost 13 million passengers are forecast to travel through the terminal annually. In addition, the 3,054 jobs in existence in 2022 will grow to 5,977 by 2044.

To support this growth, the Master Plan details a strategic development roadmap. Here’s a snapshot of what’s in store:

$500M investment:

Over the next eight years, the airport is set to undergo significant upgrades, from terminal expansions to improved transport links, providing a world-class travel experience.

Expansion to 2044:

The Master Plan envisions continued growth through to 2044, with new infrastructure aimed at increasing passenger capacity, improving freight logistics, and supporting tourism growth in the region.

Commercial and retail growth:

In addition to its transport and infrastructure improvements, the Master Plan proposes the addition of new shops, dining options, and commercial businesses at the airport. This will not only create a bustling retail hub but also provide increased employment opportunities and services, further enhancing the Gold Coast’s appeal as a regional business and tourism destination.

Improved connectivity:

The Master Plan includes enhancements to road and public transport networks, improving access to and from the airport. This will provide more efficient travel options for locals and tourists, reducing congestion and easing travel time.

Business and innovation hub:

With the airport’s growth, the plan proposes the creation of a business and innovation precinct, fostering collaboration and supporting industries like aviation, logistics, and tech, contributing to economic diversification and attracting new investment.

What’s next?

The public consultation period for the Master Plan closed in June 2024, and the plan has been submitted to the Federal Minister for approval under the Airports Act. Approval is expected before the middle of the year, at which point the final Master Plan will be published on the Gold Coast Airport website. Printed copies will be available for inspection and purchase at the Gold Coast Airport Management Office.

With the growth of this major infrastructure project, the Gold Coast as a whole and popular suburbs in the surrounding area, such as Kirra, are set to see increased demand and new opportunities, making now an exciting time to explore what’s on offer.
