Each spring, the jacarandas burst into bloom — a spectacle as much a part of Brisbane’s identity as its river or skyline.
For many, they signal the change of seasons; for students, they mark the start of exam time. But these trees have been woven into the city’s story since 1864, when Walter Hill, Director of the Botanic Gardens, is believed to have planted the first jacaranda after trading seeds with visiting sea captains. That tree grew into a 14-metre giant, and its descendants still transform neighbourhoods like Spring Hill into living postcards of Brisbane’s past and present.
For Oria residents, the jacarandas turn Victoria Park into a sea of purple — a view to be enjoyed from your balcony thanks to Oria’s elevated position. They’re a link to Brisbane’s heritage, a marker of the city’s rhythm, and a reminder that at Oria, natural beauty and history shape everyday life.
