If you’ve ever been stuck on a crowded train or left waiting on the platform during peak hour, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project will make a huge difference to your day.

The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project is a major transport upgrade designed to increase capacity, reduce delays and improve rail reliability between Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.

Why the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project matters for daily commuters

The project will double the existing 20-kilometre rail track by creating four new tracks between Kuraby and Beenleigh — one of the busiest stretches of the network, carrying both Logan and Gold Coast services.

The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail map below shows the full project corridor and key station locations.

Description: Map of the project location. Train stations identified include Kuraby, Trinder Park, Woodridge, Kingston, Loganlea, Bethania, Edens Landing, Holmview and Beenleigh. The map identifies 5 level crossings to be removed and a straightened section of track in the Trinder Park area.

But it’s not just about more track — it’s about making the journey easier from start to finish.

The new Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail route will also make it easier for customers to access high-frequency rail services through modern station upgrades and improved walking and cycling connections.

Level crossings will be removed, making a noticeable difference to local communities — from safer streets and reduced congestion, to simpler, more reliable trips for people getting to work, school and home each day.

The bottleneck

At the moment, express and all-stop services are competing for the same tracks, and during peak periods, all-stop Beenleigh trains need to be held to one side to allow Gold Coast express trains to pass through. This can lead to significant delays and unreliable travel times for commuters.

The issues this creates are many. Aside from the frustration of travel delays, when public transport doesn’t keep pace with growth, the impact goes beyond the daily commute — it shapes travel choices, adds pressure to road networks, and influences longer-term decisions about where people choose to live and work.

What’s the solution?

The solution is simple — separating express and all-stop services, so each can run on its own dedicated tracks without slowing the other one down.

Are there other benefits?

The benefits of the Logan & Gold Coast Faster Rail project go well beyond a smoother commute. Separating express and all-stop services means more frequent trains, fewer delays, improved reliability, and easier access to high-frequency rail for people travelling between Logan, the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Over time, improvements like this will change how people think about where they live. When rail becomes faster, more reliable and easier to use, it opens up new choices — making suburbs along the rail corridor more attractive for both residents and businesses.

History shows that strong, dependable infrastructure doesn’t just support daily life; it influences demand, movement patterns and, ultimately, property values.

Who’s funding it?

Backed by a $5.75 billion investment by the Australian and Queensland Governments, this project is a welcome step towards a smoother, less stressful commute.

South East Queensland is transforming

The Logan & Gold Coast Faster Rail project is part of a much bigger shift underway across South East Queensland. Population growth is accelerating, travel patterns are changing, and existing infrastructure is under increasing pressure — particularly along key commuter corridors linking Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.

Part of a significant infrastructure plan

The Logan Gold Coast Faster Rail project doesn’t sit in isolation. It complements other major infrastructure investments already in progress, including Cross River Rail and the Coomera Connector, helping to build a more connected, resilient transport network across the region.

Together, these projects are designed to move more people, more efficiently, while reducing congestion and improving reliability across road and rail.

Why it matters long term

Looking ahead, this kind of long-term planning is essential as South East Queensland prepares for continued population growth and the global spotlight of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Infrastructure projects like Faster Rail aren’t just about meeting today’s demand — they’re about future-proofing the region, supporting sustainable growth, and ensuring transport keeps pace with how and where people choose to live, work and travel.

A key milestone reached

In October 2025, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail tender reached a key milestone with the signing of the LGC Rail Project Alliance Agreement.

This Agreement formally establishes the LGC Rail Alliance between the Queensland Government, the ActivUs consortium and Queensland Rail, with contracts awarded to UGL and CPB Contractors.

When will construction begin?

The Alliance is now progressing with design, planning and site investigations. Early works and site set up are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with major construction starting later in the year.

As part of the wider Faster Rail project, works are already underway on the Loganlea Station Relocation project. Moving the station will provide better access to surrounding health, education and community precincts.

What’s the expected completion date?

The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project completion is expected in 2031, ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Games.

Once complete, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project will support population growth, reduce pressure on road networks, and make rail a more viable everyday choice for thousands of South East Queensland commuters.
