This year, Brisbane’s bus network is expanding more than it has in over a decade. With upgraded infrastructure and the introduction of high-capacity, fully electric metros, Brisbane Metro will ease congestion and improve busway efficiency, delivering a faster, more sustainable way to travel to the heart of the CBD.
When complete, the Brisbane Metro will provide:
- Eight stations, of which 11 will be interchange stations, and two of which will link to Cross River Rail stations.
- High-frequency rapid transit transport along 21 kilometres of existing busway between the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Eight Mile Plains.
- The Brisbane Metro will use 60 trackless rubber-tyred metro vehicles, each with a capacity of 150 passengers.
Throughout February 2025, you’ll see a hive of activity across key locations in the CBD. The work involves:
- Tunnelling and roadworks using advanced equipment, including excavators, cranes, trucks, and concrete machinery.
- Compaction and resurfacing with vibrating rollers and plate compactors.
- Lighting towers and other essential construction machinery in operation.
With this progress, some noise, dust, and light will be noticeable—but it’s all part of delivering a more connected and accessible Brisbane.
Key construction milestones will also be underway, including:
- Tunnelling beneath Adelaide Street
- Surface upgrades along Adelaide Street between George and Edward Street
- Strengthening and resurfacing work on Victoria Bridge
- Building the new cantilever structure on the river side of North Quay between Queen and Ann Street
Brisbane’s future is taking shape, and we’re excited to see it unfold. Whether you live, work, or visit the city, improvements such as the Brisbane Metro will make getting around easier and more efficient for everyone.
